Calvi or Saint-Florent: Which Base for a Boat Rental in Upper Corsica?
The Revellata bay against the wild Agriates desert: two Upper Corsica bases with opposite personalities for a rental boat. An iconic beach on one side, a nature reserve on the other.
On Corsica's northwest coast, Calvi and Saint-Florent compete for the title of prettiest rental base — without necessarily offering the same day at sea.
Calvi: the citadel and the Revellata
From the harbour beneath the Genoese citadel, the classic outing runs along the Revellata headland and its nature reserve, with clear water suited to snorkelling and a view over one of Corsica's most photographed bays. The rental fleet is dense, from license-free boats to RIBs, and Sainte-Catherine airport is minutes from the harbour — a real asset for improvising an outing right after landing.
Saint-Florent: the Agriates desert
Across the gulf, the Agriates desert — a coastal nature reserve untouched by development — and its Lotu beach, reachable almost only by boat or on foot, make Saint-Florent the reference base for exploring this wild coast without the crowds on the trail. The gulf is more sheltered than Calvi's bay, a real advantage when a steady northwesterly is blowing.
What the wind changes
Both gulfs remain exposed to the westerly and northwesterly gales that sweep the western Mediterranean, mistral included once it has crossed the mainland. The landmark study by Guénard, Drobinski, Caccia and co-authors, published in 2006 in the Quarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, used numerical simulation to document the dynamics of a severe mistral event on this coast (see the study on Google Scholar) — in practice, the more enclosed Saint-Florent gulf generally handles these events better than Calvi's open bay.
License-free: edge to Saint-Florent
Saint-Florent's more sheltered waters suit a license-free family outing particularly well, while the more exposed Calvi demands closer attention to the day's forecast for smaller boats.
Verdict
Choose Calvi for the citadel, direct air access and the Revellata. Choose Saint-Florent for the Agriates desert and calmer water. Our overview of touring Corsica by boat lets you combine both. Boat-Comparator queries Boataround, SamBoat and Click&Boat live to compare real prices across both bases.
