Dénia or Valencia: Which Base to Choose for a Boat Rental on the Costa Blanca?
A marine reserve at Cap Sant Antoni versus a major historic port next to the Albufera: comparing Dénia and Valencia for a boat rental.
About a hundred kilometres apart on the same stretch of Spanish Mediterranean coast, Dénia and Valencia do not attract the same kind of renter. One bets on human-scale protected marine nature, the other on the scale of a major port city.
Dénia: a marine reserve within reach of an anchorage
Cap Sant Antoni, just south of Dénia's harbour, shelters the Reserva Natural Marina del Cabo de San Antonio: close to 900 hectares of rocky seabed and Posidonia meadows recording over a thousand catalogued species. It is a snorkelling anchorage less than an hour's motoring from the harbour, complemented by the coves of Jávea just to the south.
Valencia: the port, the Albufera, the scale of a city
Valencia offers a very different profile: the historic marina expanded for the America's Cup and the F1 Grand Prix, direct access to the Albufera lagoon just south of the city, and the infrastructure of a major city for combining a day at sea with a cultural stop. Its waters see far more commercial and leisure traffic than Dénia's quieter ones.
Why the Dénia reserve is worth the detour
The Posidonia meadows you cross at the Cap Sant Antoni anchorage are not just scenery: this seagrass, endemic to the Mediterranean, produces oxygen, holds the seabed against erosion and shelters the reproduction of a great many fish species. It remains fragile against warming, though: the study by Marbà and Duarte, published in 2010 in Global Change Biology, shows that beyond roughly 28.4 °C sustained, Posidonia meadows enter thermal stress and mortality rises sharply (see the study on Google Scholar) — one more reason to anchor on sand rather than on the meadow, as our guide to anchoring on Posidonia reminds us.
Our recommendation
Snorkelling, coves and a relaxed pace: Dénia. Combining sailing with a city stop, or reaching the Albufera: Valencia.
