The Golden Islands — Porquerolles, Port-Cros, Île du Levant — are the number-one target of any boat rental between Marseille and Saint-Tropez. Hyères and Toulon both give access, but with different logic.
Hyères: the direct gateway
From La Tour Fondue or Hyères harbour, Porquerolles is reachable in under twenty minutes' cruising — the shortest crossing on the whole Var coast. It's the most efficient base for maximising time on the island rather than at sea, with a dense rental fleet from license-free boats to RIBs. Toulon: the large roadstead, more boat choice
The Toulon roadstead, one of the largest in Europe, offers sheltered water and a noticeably wider rental fleet, from license-free boats to crewed yachts. The crossing to Porquerolles is longer — typically 45 minutes to an hour depending on the starting point — but Toulon also lets you explore the Mourillon coves or Cap Sicié without leaving the roadstead if the weather turns uncertain.
Wind as a deciding factor
This coast is exposed to the mistral and to a regular summer sea breeze that builds through late morning. License-free: clear edge to Hyères
For a first license-free family outing, the short crossing to Porquerolles from Hyères remains the reference — expect 100 to 250 € a day depending on the season.
