Santa Ponsa or Cala d'Or: Which Base Should You Pick in Mallorca?

West near Palma or east among the Migjorn coves: two different moods for a boat rental in Mallorca.

Santa Ponsa and Cala d'Or sit at opposite ends of Mallorca — west and east — and don't offer the same kind of sailing.

Two coastlines, two moods

The west coast, around Santa Ponsa, faces Palma Bay and the Cabrera archipelago further south; the east coast, around Cala d'Or, opens onto the narrow Migjorn coves, more intimate and less crowded with large cruise charters.

Santa Ponsa, right by Palma

An ideal base for a day trip combining beach time, nightlife on the Magaluf side, and quick access to Palma Bay: the water here is more open, with more leisure boat traffic in peak season than on the east side of the island.

Cala d'Or, gateway to the Migjorn coves

To the east, the Migjorn coves (Cala Mondragó, Cala Sanau, Cala Ferrera) are best explored by RIB or small motorboat, able to slip into inlets too narrow for a large sailboat. Our guide "Alcúdia or Cala d'Or" also covers the comparison with the island's northern base.

Anchoring, a shared issue on both coasts

On both coastlines, summer crowds quickly saturate the best-known anchorages: a mapping study of anchoring-area capacity along the Balearic Islands' coast counted 318 sites across the whole coastline and found recurring saturation at the most attractive spots in summer, which is exactly why leaving early in the morning pays off (Mapping the nautical carrying capacity of anchoring areas of the Balearic Islands' coast, see the study on Google Scholar).

Our take

For a week of relaxed beach time and lively evenings, Santa Ponsa and the west of the island; for a week focused on quiet coves and snorkelling, Cala d'Or and the Migjorn — the two bases are still connected by a coastal road that lets you combine both in the same trip.
