License-free boating in Rovinj: the local waters

The water around Rovinj is among the most forgiving in the Adriatic for a small boat: an archipelago of wooded islets set in front of the Venetian old town, with St Catherine's island a few hundred metres off the mole and Red Island just behind it, both reachable within minutes at low speed. To the north, the Lim channel — a narrow green arm of the sea, known for its oyster beds — runs some ten kilometres inland; Luka Vrh Lima, at its head, lies 9.3 km from Rovinj. The Istrian maestral is steady in the afternoon, and the bora loses much of the violence it has in the Kvarner: the morning sea remains the best window, since the bay closes in on itself quickly once the wind builds.
