850 € median across 18 offers: the smallest catalogue of our 119 bases
Survey of 4 September 2026 for a 4 October charter: 18 offers, median 850 € per day, cheapest offer 243 €, most expensive 4,356 € — a 1 to 18 spread between the two extremes. The number that matters here is not the median but the denominator: with 18 offers, Sotogrande is the thinnest of the 119 bases we survey; the second smallest, Kas, has 20. On a catalogue that narrow, two or three boats entering or leaving the stock move the median by several hundred euros. So these 850 € are a single day’s snapshot, not a settled market price, and Sotogrande ranks only 92nd lowest median out of 119. The category breakdown shows the same fragility: motorboat 5 offers (median 920 €, from 700 € to 2,200 €), sailboat 4 offers from 243 € to 650 €, catamaran 3 offers from 600 € to 960 €, and a single yacht at 4,356 € — which on its own sets the maximum. None of these figures has the robustness of a median: read them as indications. Those four categories add up to just 13 of the 18 offers, and we have no reliable record at all for RIBs or for licence-free boats in Sotogrande. One more signal before hunting for a bargain: at 243 €, the local entry price is only the 110th lowest first offer out of 119 bases. To decide which platform to query first on such a thin stock, see our comparison of boat rental platforms.
Puerto de Sotogrande 300 m away, eight more marinas within 42 km
According to the OpenStreetMap extract, the immediate departure point is Puerto de Sotogrande, 0.3 km away. The coast lines up several others: Puerto Deportivo de la Duquesa (8.3 km), Puerto Deportivo de Puente Mayorga (16.1 km), Alcaidesa Marina (16.4 km), Puerto Estepona (17.4 km), Puerto Deportivo Algeciras-Saladillo (24.2 km), Puerto Deportivo José Banús (36 km) and Puerto Deportivo Virgen del Carmen, de Marbella (41.7 km) (OpenStreetMap records). That density matters when the local catalogue is this narrow: widening the search by 20 km changes the outcome more than waiting for Sotogrande prices to drop. Head west and you enter the Strait of Gibraltar, which is no ordinary stretch of water. A study by Rocío Espada and co-authors (Journal of Marine Science and Engineering, 2025) covers that strait specifically — the waters west of Sotogrande, not the roadstead in front of the marina. The authors describe a major biogeographic and ecological corridor between the Mediterranean and the Atlantic that enables the seasonal migration of the fin whale. From validated sightings collected between April 2016 and October 2024, supplemented by surveys in January and March 2025 and cross-referenced with EMODnet traffic density layers, they record 347 sightings totalling 692 individuals, with movements mostly westward between June and August; the strongest exposure lies near the Bay of Algeciras/Gibraltar and in the northern half of the central strait, where cargo and tanker traffic concentrates (see the study). It is the first characterisation of the species’ spatial and temporal exposure to maritime traffic during that migration. Local routes are detailed in our guide to boat rental in Sotogrande and the Strait of Gibraltar, and the full list of basins is in the marinas around Sotogrande hub.
850 € in October against 597 € in September: fleet mix, not a price rise
Our monthly figures give a 637 € median in August 2026 (3 surveys), 597 € in September 2026 (4 surveys) and 850 € in October 2026 (a single survey). Reading that curve as a rate increase would be a mistake: the October value rests on one survey of 18 offers, including the 4,356 € yacht. One large boat joining the catalogue, or one small boat leaving it, is enough to produce the 253 € gap observed between September and October. That is a fleet composition effect, not a tariff going up — all the more reason to compare several dates rather than a single screen, as explained in our guide on starting prices versus fixed prices. On the rules: in Spain, no qualification is required up to 15 hp (11 kW) on a hull of 5 m maximum (6 m under sail), in daylight and within 2 nautical miles of shelter. Note that we hold no reliable record of licence-free boats in Sotogrande: that category has to be looked for elsewhere along the coast. The most useful benchmark is the neighbour itself: Estepona, 17.4 km away, shows a 559 € median across 47 offers, from 115 € to 5,300 € (surveyed 29 August 2026) — 57th lowest median out of 119, against 92nd for Sotogrande, with two and a half times more boats and an entry price half as high. Further east, Marbella climbs to 1,395 € across 100 offers. All three ports sit on the same shoreline: the gap comes from stock and its composition, not the weather. Regional bearings are in our guide to boat rental in Andalusia, Marbella and Malaga, and the wider picture in our guide to boat rental prices by country.
Sotogrande's waters, in practice
The approaches to the Strait of Gibraltar, where Atlantic and Mediterranean meet. Wind-wise: the levante-poniente duel, amplified by the strait’s funnel — water you read by the flags.
Departures, day-trip classics and season
Departures: the Sotogrande marina, between polo fields and golf courses. The local classics: the Rock of Gibraltar and Algeciras bay, the coast towards Estepona and, on clear days, the Moroccan Rif. High season: from May to October, the strait’s whales as the star excursion.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a boat rental cost in Sotogrande?
Roughly €100–250 per day for a license-free boat, €200–600 for a RIB, more for motorboats, sailboats and catamarans. Boat-Comparator compares the real prices published by the platforms at the time of your search.
Do I need a license to rent a boat in Sotogrande?
In Spain, no qualification is required up to 15 hp (11 kW) on a hull of 5 m maximum (6 m under sail), in daylight and within 2 nautical miles of shelter. One of the most generous rules in the Mediterranean — but each harbour master can refine it locally: your operator will confirm what applies to their waters.
Which platforms list boats in Sotogrande?
Boat-Comparator queries Boataround, SamBoat, Click&Boat and GlobeSailor live, showing price, photo, rating and booking link for every offer.
Why is the 850 € median in Sotogrande unreliable?
Because it rests on just 18 offers in the 4 September 2026 survey, the smallest catalogue among the 119 bases we track — the second smallest, Kas, has 20. On a stock that thin, a single large boat arriving or leaving, here a 4,356 € yacht, is enough to move the median by several hundred euros. Use it as an order of magnitude and cross-check it against a better stocked neighbour such as Estepona (559 € across 47 offers, surveyed 29 August 2026).
Do you need a licence to rent a boat in Sotogrande?
In Spain, no qualification is required up to 15 hp (11 kW) on a hull of 5 m maximum (6 m under sail), in daylight and within 2 nautical miles of shelter. Above that you need a qualification or a skippered charter. Our surveys hold no reliable data on licence-free boats in Sotogrande, nor on RIBs: for both formats, widen the search to the neighbouring marinas listed above.
