Mosquitoes at anchor: why they bite hardest at dusk, and how to actually avoid them

An idyllic bay by day can turn unbearable at sunset. Why coastal mosquitoes cluster near the shore at anchor, and the simple habits that change your evening.

The cove was perfect at 6pm; by 8pm, drinks on deck have turned into a slapping match. This classic summer-anchorage scenario isn't inevitable — it comes down to well-documented mosquito behaviour near the coast, and a few simple habits to get away from it.

Why they cluster near the shore

Mosquitoes biting at anchor almost always come from a breeding site nearby on land — a marsh, a river mouth, damp vegetation — and disperse out to sea from that point. A review of the scientific literature by Verdonschot and Besse-Lototskaya, published in 2014 in the journal Limnologica, shows that flight distance from the breeding site varies enormously by species, from a few dozen metres to several kilometres for some saltmarsh species (see the study on Google Scholar) — a wide range that explains why some bays near a wetland stay infested well after sunset, while others further out are almost spared.

Why dusk specifically

Most biting species active around the Mediterranean and the Atlantic coast hunt at dawn and especially at dusk, once the heat drops and the thermal breeze fades — precisely when you're settling into the cockpit for dinner.

Habits that genuinely change your evening

A habit to pair with your night at anchor

Choosing a more open anchorage lines up with our guide to sleeping well aboard at anchor, and for tropical destinations, our guide to the medical kit before a tropical departure covers protection against disease-carrying species too, a separate issue from simply losing a pleasant evening — relevant, for instance, for a charter out of Le Marin, Martinique.
