One harbour, and twenty kilometres of Freus to Ibiza

Everything leaves from La Savina: Marina de Formentera, Formentera Mar and Mollet d’en Guasc all sit within the first 200 metres (OpenStreetMap records), and there is no other departure point on the island. The next bases are in Ibiza, some twenty kilometres away across the Freus: PortIbizaTown, Ibiza Magna, Marina Botafoch, Club Naútico Ibiza and Marina Ibiza, all between 19.8 and 20.3 km. That Freus crossing, with current and a short chop when the tramontana blows, is the real difficulty of the day — not the coastal run along the beaches. On those beaches, a 2013 study by Francesc Xavier Roig-Munar et al. in the Journal of Coastal Research classified 100 beaches of Ibiza and Formentera (24 in Formentera alone) against 35 variables of use, condition and management, distinguishing urban beaches, semi-natural beaches with urban features and natural beaches, and warning that the second group tends to drift towards the first (see the study). That is exactly what is at stake at Ses Illetes and s’Espalmador, where anchoring is regulated and the meadows are buoyed. September in Formentera: −13%, and an island that empties

The median falls from €623 for August outings to €540 for September ones, that is −13%. The clearest gain is not financial, though: it is room at anchor. In August, Ses Illetes and s’Espalmador fill up by mid-morning; from mid-September you find afternoon slots again.
