Boat Rental in Marmaris: The Most Sheltered Bay on the Turkish Riviera
Turunç, Kumlubük, the Gulf of Hisarönü toward Datça: why Marmaris, home to some of Turkey's biggest marinas, remains an easy starting point even for a first-time charter.
On the Turkish riviera, Marmaris sits in an almost landlocked bay — one of the best natural shelters in the whole Aegean — lined with some of the country's best-equipped marinas. A reassuring starting point, including for a first charter with little prior experience.
A sheltered bay, ideal for beginners
Unlike other more exposed Aegean spots, Marmaris's inner bay often stays flat even as the meltemi (also known as the etesian wind) — the dominant Aegean summer wind — picks up offshore: the surrounding hills filter out much of the wind before it reaches the water. A landmark climatology study on this wind system shows it is driven by the pressure contrast between the Balkans and the Near East, with an intensity highly sensitive to local terrain — which is exactly why well-enclosed bays like Marmaris stay surprisingly calm while the wind is picking up just a few miles offshore (Tyrlis & Lelieveld, Journal of the Atmospheric Sciences, 2013). Reassuring for crews new to sailing or RIB handling in the eastern Mediterranean.
Classic trips out of Marmaris
Head for the bays of Turunç and Kumlubük, under an hour away, for turquoise water and well-sheltered anchorages. More ambitious: the Gulf of Hisarönü toward Datça, a wild peninsula known for its deserted coves and beach restaurants reachable only by sea. For crews sorted with the necessary clearance formalities, the nearby Greek island of Symi even lets you combine Turkey and Greece in a single trip — our guide to customs and border formalities covers what is involved.
When to go
The season runs from May to October, with some of the best value in Mediterranean chartering — Turkish fleets generally stay more affordable than comparable Croatian or Greek ones. July and August naturally see most bookings and the highest prices; June and September offer equally warm water for a noticeably lower budget.
