BOAT-COMPARATOR Guide
Where to Rent a Boat in the Balearics: Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza or Formentera?
Four islands, four moods: Mallorca’s deep fleets, Menorca’s unspoilt calas, the translucent water of Ibiza-Formentera. The guide to choosing your Balearic departure island.
The Balearics are Spain’s most sought-after cruising waters, and each island plays its own tune. Before filtering offers on our Balearics boat rental hub, here is what the choice of departure island really changes.
Mallorca: fleet depth
This is the island with the widest choice, from bareboat motorboats to cruising catamarans. Palma fields the biggest charter fleets, Alcúdia opens onto the great northern bay, Santa Ponsa and Cala d’Or serve the west coast and the south-eastern calas respectively — our comparisons Santa Ponsa or Cala d’Or and Alcúdia or Cala d’Or go into detail. To the south, the Cabrera national park is visited with a mooring permit booked in advance.
Menorca: the preserved one
A biosphere reserve, Menorca is the anti-Ibiza: wild calas like Macarella and Turqueta, a north coast carved by the tramontana and the natural harbour of Mahón, one of the largest in the Mediterranean. Ciutadella puts you closest to the south-western calas. The fleet is smaller than Mallorca’s: book early — our Menorca guide maps the itineraries.
Ibiza and Formentera: Europe’s most photographed water
The Ibiza-Formentera duo owes its clarity to posidonia meadows listed as UNESCO World Heritage. The must-dos: Es Vedrà, the beaches of Formentera, the anchorages of San Antonio and Santa Eulalia. It is also the priciest island in August, and the one where platform-to-platform spreads are widest. The full match-up is in Ibiza or Mallorca.
Anchoring: the golden rule on all four islands
Everywhere in the Balearics, the anchor goes down on sand, never in the seagrass — eco-moorings equip the sensitive areas. That framework rests on science: a spatial analysis of recreational boating around Mallorca published by Balaguer and co-authors in 2011 mapped nautical traffic precisely to reconcile anchoring with meadow conservation (see the study on Google Scholar). Our guide to anchoring right sums up the habits that avoid a fine.
The practical verdict
First charter or maximum choice: Mallorca. Nature and empty calas: Menorca, outside August. Translucent water and scene: Ibiza-Formentera, budget accordingly. One search on Boat-Comparator queries every platform across the ten Balearic bases and puts real prices side by side — and the Balearics by boat guide helps plan the route.
